Talk/Shop: Kristyn of Milk & Crown
Getting right to it, I just adore Kristyn's inspirational jewelry line, Milk & Crown. It speaks to my taste in jewelry: minimal, classic, versatile. I have so enjoyed getting to know Kristyn better over the past few weeks - she is one talented lady who seems to do it all! Not only does she run her fantastic jewelry shop, but she manages her blog, goes to school, freelances, and still has time for creative writing and photography! I can't wait to see how her shop grows! Just take a look below at her "future goals" - I love it! Continue below to read the full Talk/Shop with Kristyn, including how exactly she came up with the Milk & Crown shop + blog name!
Tell me a little bit about yourself: I’m Kristyn, a creative writer, jewelry designer, and aesthetics lover. I live in Hyde Park with my favorite guy where I enjoy dreaming and creating. In my spare time, I blog over at Milk + Crown, where I love sharing tidbits of my daily life and inspiration. I run a jewelry shop by the same name, where I make simple, delicate, modern jewelry for everyday wear.
Let’s start at the beginning: I’ve always wanted to do something with design but was never sure which direction to take. I saw bloggers posting about jewelry they liked and I thought to myself, “I can do that!” One day, I happened up on a photo of a milk crown—basically the shape milk takes when it splashes. It was so fleeting and beautiful, and I found myself sketching a necklace design, the Caron, which is essentially a milk crown in jewelry form. Everything continued from there.
The best thing about owning your own small business? I love being my own boss. The autonomy my shop gives me is exactly what my creative process needs. I think it helps me stay inspired and interested.
What has been the biggest challenge? I didn’t study business, and so the bookkeeping is a little difficult for me. Besides that, just getting the word out. The jewelry market is so saturated, and it can be hard to get noticed. Thankfully, things are continuing to grow, and I’m hopeful this next year, things will start to take off.
What are your future goals? I’m hoping to take the line in a new direction next year. I want to take metal-smithing classes and start using all ethically sourced or recycled materials. Philanthropy is a big part of my mission, and while I love shopping around for beads and charms, I want to use more metals, wire shapes, precious stones, and eventually create a small collection of eco-friendly rings.
What’s your favorite piece in your collection and why? Right now, the Tova necklace. It’s so versatile, and I love the combination of black glass beads and gold chain. The design is modern but still classic.
What inspires your designs? It’s a combination of many things. I love minimalist fashion, so I take a lot of cues from that, but at the same time, I love the geometry of nature. Simple designs and lines are my go-to. I also love listening to French jazz music to get the creative juices flowing.
Current obsession? Oh, I think it’s safe to say I’m obsessed with Everlane. Their entire concept is incredible, and I love their designs. I recently revamped my wardrobe using their clothing as a basis. It’s all about intention, integrity and minimalism.
Favorite daily reads in the webosphere? Coco and Mingo is one of my favorites, as well as We Resolve, A Daily Something, Reading My Tea Leaves, Tales of Me and The Husband, The Secret Life of Bee, Breanna Rose, Love Court, and Spark (when I need writing inspiration).
Other shops you’re inspired by? Oh there are so many! And not all jewelry shops, either. I love Pollen & Wax, Herbivore Botanicals, Ross Lab, Bookhou, Amulette, Favor, Sunday Owl, Cocorinna, and In Haus Press.
